Updating Knobiq, and un-bricking it.
An update is a file you send from the web panel. Knobiq writes it to a spare slot and checks it before switching, so a failed update leaves the old firmware running. If all else fails, it can be re-flashed over a cable.
From the panel
Open the web panel and go to CONFIG → UPDATE FIRMWARE. Pick the knobiq.bin file and send it. Knobiq writes the image to its spare slot, verifies it, switches the boot slot and restarts. If the boot slot did not actually change, it refuses instead of pretending it worked and starting on the old image.
Several units at once
Got more than one Knobiq? The ota.py script updates every device on a list, or one by name, and waits until each reports the version that was built, not just until it answers (the old firmware still answers right before the restart).
If something goes wrong
A broken upload never replaces the running firmware: the new image only takes over once it has been written and verified. A saved configuration can’t lock you out either. After three unfinished starts in a row Knobiq boots on factory settings and leaves your saved file untouched; the counter resets ten seconds after a good start.
Recovery: flashing over a cable
When an update over Wi‑Fi isn’t an option, flash it over USB with ESP-IDF. The board has two USB sockets and they are not interchangeable: the UART bridge is for flashing and the serial console, the native USB is the only one that carries MIDI.
Still stuck?
Send a bug report with what you tried and the device log (CONFIG → device log, COPY takes all of it). We'll sort it out with you.
